Take deposits or full payment on online bookings
Ask clients for a deposit or the full price when they book online, choose whether to offer tips at booking, and see what happens if payment never arrives.
A deposit is collected when a client books a service online. It comes off what they owe at the appointment. Deposits need online booking, which is part of Pro and Branded, and Stripe or Square connected.
Set a deposit on a service
- Go to Services and edit the service.
- Under Booking deposit, choose Fixed amount or Percent of price and enter the value, or choose Full price.
- Save.
Clients see the deposit on your services list and before they confirm their booking, so it never comes as a surprise.
Require payment in full
Choose Full price to have clients pay the whole price when they book. It follows the service price, so changing the price later needs no other change. A 100% deposit, or a fixed deposit at or above the price, works the same way.
Clients see Pay in full to book instead of a deposit amount, and the pay page offers tip options, with No tip selected to start. If you would rather not ask for a tip before the service, untick Ask for a tip when clients pay in full at booking under Settings > Payments. You can still take a tip after the visit with Add tip on the appointment. See Collect payment for an appointment.
What the client experiences
After choosing a time, the client is taken to your processor's secure checkout to pay. Their time slot is held while they pay.
If payment never arrives
If a client leaves without paying, the held slot is released automatically, usually within one to two hours, and the appointment shows as Cancelled (unpaid). You are only emailed about the booking once they have paid, so abandoned bookings do not fill your inbox.
At the appointment
When you complete the appointment, the amount still owed is the service price minus the deposit. Tips are worked out on the full service price. A service paid in full shows as Paid, and any tip added at booking is already on the appointment.
